Tracking your results is an important element of any comprehensive search engine optimization campaign. Results tracking entails monitoring the search engine result pages (SERP's) for the position of your site for your chosen keywords. Proper tracking reveals possible optimization deficiencies, algorithm changes and new or increased competition. Tracking should take place regularly, but can vary depending upon the goals and targets of your site.
Tracking should take place across each of the search engines you have targeted for ranking. If you're manually performing results tracking and have a decent number of keywords, that can add up to a lot of time.
Reporting the results of your sites position in the search engines is the second half of the equation. Reports need to be in a format which is easy to understand and act upon. Properly presented, these reports allow you to effectively redirect or reposition resources in an optimization campaign. Reporting should take place at least quarterly, but ideally monthly.
